HMI 2009-2010 Chapel Season Now Underway
Thursday November 12, 2009
The 2009-2010 professional and amateur hockey season is now in full swing, and with that, the Hockey Ministries International chapel outreach. For the past month and a half, HMi's faithful group of chaplains have been taking Biblical truth and the Gospel message into the locker rooms of hundreds of professional and amateur athletes all across North America.
Christian Hockey Camps International, Hockey Ministries International's youth camp outreach, just completed its 2009 schedule. Thirty three weeks of camps took place this summer in seven different countries around the globe including the United States, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Finland.
Keep in stride with Hockey Ministries International and this new, interactive contact point to all facets of the game. From youth leagues, college and junior, up through minor pro to the NHL, Hockey Ministries encourages and challenges a deep connection to the spiritual needs of players, coaches, families and fans in the global hockey community. Through camps, chapels, clinics, conferences and special events, HMI has a vibrant and growing presence in 7 countries, 28 leagues and more than 30 camps in North America and Europe.
HMI would like to remember a wonderful long-time ministry friend from the hockey community who died this spring.
Hank Bassen passed away on May 29 at the age of 76. Hank was a former professional goalie who played in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins. As a youngster in junior hockey, Bassen was a premier player in the Western Hockey League for the Calgary Stampeders, Seattle Americans and Vancouver Canucks.
For many years, Hank was a driving force and leader of HMI's Calgary youth hockey camp. HMI President, Don Liesemer Sr., was one of several people who gave a eulogy at Bassen's funeral and commented, "It is hard to say goodbye to a dear friend. While winning many awards, Hank's real trophies were his family members...wife Shirley, and children Shane, Brian, Bob, Sandra and Mark. Three cheers for Hank Bassen, a faithful witness to the living Christ."
