  • Hockey is a fast, physical, and demanding sport. Whether you're grinding through early morning practices, chasing a championship, or just trying to make the team, it's easy to get caught up in the pressure and competition. But as followers of Christ, we know there's more to the game than just wins and losses. God can use hockey to shape our character, build our faith, and give us opportunities to shine His light.

Here are 7 Bible verses every hockey player should keep in mind, both on and off the ice!

    1. Colossians 3:23

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

This is a great reminder that our effort isn't just for coaches, scouts, or fans. It's for God. Whether you’re in a big game or doing drills at practice, you can give your best for God, in a way giving our best is a way to show our gratefulness for the incredible opportunity to play a game that we love!

    2. Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

The road in hockey isn’t always easy. Injuries, losses or bad stretches of play can shake our confidence. This verse encourages you to lean on God, even when things don’t make sense.

    3. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.”

Paul uses sports to make a deeper point. Discipline matters, just like you train your body for hockey, you’re also called to train your heart and mind to live for Christ.

    4. Philippians 4:13

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

When you're tired, nervous, or under pressure, this verse reminds you where your real strength comes from. It’s not just about pushing through, it’s about trusting that God is with you in every moment.

    5. James 1:2-4

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Hockey isn’t always fun. There are tough games, bad calls, and tough seasons. This verse encourages us to see those moments as opportunities to grow in faith and endurance whether it's stuggles at or away from the rink..

    6. Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

In the hockey world, it can be tempting to follow the crowd. But God calls us to live differently. To be humble. To have integrity. To let our faith guide how we act in the locker room, on the bench, and during the game.

    7. Micah 6:8

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

This verse is a simple and powerful guide for life. As a teammate, as a competitor, and as a person, God calls us to be fair, kind, and humble. These qualities matter just as much as your stats.
