I remember attending a Hockey Ministries International camp as a 17-year-old instructor. I was encouraged by my parents to go and volunteer. The people I met there showed me what it means to be a believer in Christ. Their example inspired me to strive to become the kind of person God wanted me to be. That week, I fully accepted Jesus into my heart, inviting Him to take control of my life and its direction. Looking back, my faith has pushed me to become a better person—guiding my decisions and convicting me to be firmly rooted in Christ and to strive to be the best I can be for the glory of God.
As a professional hockey player, it’s easy to get caught in the chase for success. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned to treat each day as a blessing and not to take anything for granted. In this business, nothing is guaranteed. I might be chasing a new contract, stressing over playing time, or worrying about my stats. I’ve learned to set those concerns aside as best I can, leaning on my faith in Christ and, above all else, trusting in the plan God has for me.
Isaiah 43:2 [ESV] says:“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”
During my freshman year of college hockey in Alaska, I was suspended and couldn’t travel with my team. I spent a lot of that time alone, uncertain about my future in the sport and in life. I questioned God and grew frustrated, unable to see the path ahead. But now, I can look back and see the plans He had for me. It was during that time that I met Jennifer, who would later become my wife. She supported and encouraged me, helping me deepen my relationship with Jesus and find peace in Him.
