Tyson Jost share's his story and faith

    March 10, 2024

I was raised by a single mom and mygrandparents. Both my mom and grandpafacilitated my passion for hockey. My momwas the star — driving my sister to volleyballand dance, taking me to hockey and allthe while trying to find time for herself. Appreciation for that kind of commitment deepens as you mature. I have always admiredmy mom and I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. Her Christian faith inspired meand she exemplified it every day. I knew it was something I wanted in my life.

My personal faith in Christ was tested while playing for the Penticton Vees. I was closeto our team chaplain who passed away from cancer. He was a huge part of my life and itwas devastating to watch him suffer. I didn’t understand why someone so young shouldbe taken and I was upset and confused. He left behind an amazing family. I got through it by realizing he was at peace in heaven with Jesus. I am grateful for what he taught me and for the close ties I still enjoy with his family.

Every day is a blessing and gift from God — an opportunity to express love, positivity, hap-piness, and kindness. Knowing that Jesus sacrificed His life for me motivates me to be the best version of myself every day. I want to work my hardest at hockey and I desire tobe a good person off the ice. God has blessed me with opportunities and talents. I neverwant to take that for granted.

I keep my spiritual life alive by attending our HMI team chapels with some of my team-mates and by praying daily.

I have three special verses which I often turn to for help and guidance: “Let us notbecome weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do notgive up” (Galatians 6:9); “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength”(Philippians 4:13); and “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your ownunderstanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”(Proverbs 3:5-6).
